10 UNIMAID Geoscientists Kidnapped by Boko Haram while searching for Oil

About 10 staff of the surveying and geology department of the University of Maiduguri have been kidnapped by suspected Boko haram members. According to Ndu Ughamadu of the NNPC, the 10 staff of UNIMAID were contracted by NNPC as consultants to carry out research oil exploration work in the lake chad basin. "They were kidnapped after a gun duel between the Boko haram and the security operatives that accompanied the NNPC officials" Ndu Ughamadu said.

Over the years, Oil has been synonymous with the Niger Delta region, but recent seismic survey results indicated commercial quantity of Oil deposits in the Chad Basin. Further research and exploration is ongoing in the Basin, but has been disrupted by the Boko haram insurgency that characterized the region.

The spokesman of UNIMAID, Danjuma Gambo confirmed the incidence, but added that the university is awaiting further details from security operatives.
