Over 200 youths in Uyo threaten to disrupt super Eagles match against Zambia

Youths of Obio Etoi and Obio offot community in Uyo Local government on thursday stormed the Godswill Akpabio international stadium with placards and threatened to disrupt the super Eagle's world cup cup qualifiers match with the chipolopolo of Zambia on saturday.

According to the youth leader of Obio Etoi village, Sunday Peters, majority of the youths are still unemployed and road networks have not been constructed in the community as was agreed by the two parties before commencement of construction work on the site.

“The company blocked all diversion ways to the community with their heavy equipment and machines, at a point we had to sell our land to maintain the road. That is why we are crying to the state government and we will continue to cry until something is done” he said.

The village head of the Obio Etoi, Eteidung Ezekiel Inyang Ekott said that the youths’ action was not geared towards disrupting the match but its a simple way to attract the attention of the government. He made it known that many members of the community lost their lands simply because of the the stadium project. He intimated that water ways have been blocked by the project thereby causing heavy flooding in the community and that the state government has ignored several reminding letters that he sent to them.

Meanwhile the state commissioner of works Ephraim Inyang came to the scene of the protest alongside the commissioner of information Charles Udo. The works commissioner pleaded for calm by the protesters. He hinted that roads within the community have been earmarked for construction and promised that construction work will commence very soon.
