Too reluctant to come off his line at times but kept steadily at a stadium where his past heroics won United points. Was not tested as stringently on his fourth appearance at St Mary's. 6
Antonio Valencia
Not as adventurous as usual and did little to effect United's attack. More adept in his own third, where he was solid. 6
Eric Bailly
Rectified his positioning after a careless start and provided good cover. Gobbled up most of Southampton's knock-downs. 8
Phil Jones
Southampton exposed him with a couple of aerial deliveries but Jones was unflustered and defended stoutly yet again. 8
Ashley Young
He remains United's best crosser and is the interim solution at left-back after another fine performance. Assisted Romelu Lukaku's goal and might get an England recall on this form. 7
Nemanja Matic
United missed Paul Pogba but Matic stepped up as the conduit between defence and attack. No coincidence United scored after he took the game by the lapels but overwhelmed in second-half. 6
Marouane Fellaini
Rollocked by Bailly and Jones for not pressing and was workmanlike from the start again. Not very creative in attack. 5
Juan Mata
Moved along the frontline intuitively and had some auspicious openings but was not clinical enough. 5
Marcus Rashford
Started brightly but suddenly faded to the brink of anonymity. Too selfish at times with his dribbling when teammates were better placed. 5
Henrikh Mkhitaryan
A major threat on the counter and linked the attack effortlessly when United ventured into the final third. Quickened their play. 6
Romelu Lukaku
Made it eight in eight and led the line brilliantly. His excellent start extends to his leadership skills - Lukaku is not afraid to give time-served United players a rollocking. 7
