LIES OF THE CENTURY! The truth about the legendary Nigeria vs India match
Virtually every Nigerian born before the advent of the internet in the country must have heard about the popular Nigeria VS India match. The stories surrounding this match was so popular that it soaked the entire inhabitants of the country. Where ever you were residing, be it in the North, the south or the west, you must have heard about this myth of a match where Nigeria was defeated by 99 goals to 1 by India. 
Nigerian team line up for the Non-existent match There are many versions of stories about this legendary match and which ever one you heard, you have to note that the match did not take place. It is a blatant lie! The stories about this non existent match had it that; 1. The match ended INDIA 99 VS 1 NIGERIA 2. India used Black black magic voodoo in the match. The Ball kept turning to Lion when they played the ball towards the Nigerian Goal and the Nigerian goal keeper ran away and they scored. 3. They agreed that if Nigeria scored one goal, then they will concede defeat and declare Nigeria as the winner. 4. Samuel Okwaraji Scored the only goal for Nigeria and died during the match. 5. India were banned for life from playing football by FIFA because of this match. This false story has been very popular. It has thrived for so long probably because there were no records for people to affirm the authenticity of the story. Prior to the year 2000, the internet was not readily accessible for Nigerians to confirm such stories. We all grew up to hear about the story of this match and we believed it. Our parents and teachers confirmed to us that this story was true. The only atom of truth in this story is that Samuel Okwaraji died during a match. The truth is that Samuel Okwaraji died during a FIFA world cup qualifying match against Angola on the 77th minute. Some people tend to believe the story because India has not participated in any International FIFA competition. The truth here is that India has not qualified to play in the FIFA world cup since the 1950 world cup where they were disqualified for opting to play bare footed. Though recent reports have it that they withdrew from the tournament because of financial reasons.Please note that India was not banned by FIFA and Nigeria has never played a football Match with India!This blatant lies spread like wild fire in the 90s.
